How to make a mirrored barn door
Want a barn door? Need full-length mirror? How about a mirrored barn door?
We needed a sliding door for our new bathroom. And since my full length mirror went away in the remodel, here's what we came up with.
Here's how we did it:
1. Purchase a solid wood door
We bought ours at Home Depot for $25!!! It's just a primed, flat hardwood slab door. Super simple. Here's a picture of the side label.
2. Prep the door
The easiest way to paint or sand any object is to raise it onto a table. I used these portable saw horses and tried to keep it in the shade.
First, sand!
This will help the primer and paint adhere to the surface.
I used this mechanical sander but you can also just get 60 grit sand paper at the hardware store. After you finish (this is important), wipe off the remnants with a cloth and mineral spirits. I made the mistake of skipping this step once and it made for some interesting texture on my cabinet doors! Ugh.
Paint the door with primer
I made the mistake of trying to use these small foam rollers we already had because I wanted a smooth finish. That turned out to be a big, time-consuming mistake. SO...what I recommend is to go to the hardware store and get the smoothest rollers you can find in the normal large size. I also buy those throw-away paint tray liners. A little wasteful but much easier.
2. Paint the door
You only have to paint one side (the interior side) since the mirror will be glued directly to the other side. I used an old can of white semi-gloss. If its old, make sure to stir it well!
Excuse the outfit. I don't usually paint in strapless dresses but I was putting a final coat on as we were running out for dinner and Lance caught me.
3. Apply the mirror
Once the paint is dry, flip it over and glue down the mirror. I went to a great local place and had them cut a piece of mirror to fit the door. It cost about $125 (4 times more than the door itself).
4. Hardware Installation
The first step is to apply the wheels to the top of the door. We did this when it was laying down for obvious reasons (much easier).
Lance used blue tape along the area where the hardware would go. That way, he could make all kinds of marks on the wall and not have to wash them off later. He used a level to make sure the hardware was completely straight and then followed the directions on the box!
Barn door hardware is getting very popular. You can find it everywhere online. Here is a relatively inexpensive one.
TA-DA. Here it is. NOW GO MAKE YOURSELF A MIRRORED BARN DOOR!
